Ubuntu IVI Remix receives GENIVI Alliance Compliance Approval

London 3rd August 2011: Canonical today announces its Ubuntu IVI (In-vehicle-infotainment) Remix has been accepted by the GENIVI Alliance as compliant according to GENIVI’s recently announced compliance program. This is an IVI-specific base operating system that allows manufacturers to develop in-vehicle Internet-rich, multimedia entertainment systems with public cloud connectivity capabilities.

The Ubuntu IVI Remix is based on Ubuntu Core, a sub set of Ubuntu technologies suited for the next generation of Internet-enabled embedded devices such as IVI systems.  The platform is available for both the Intel® Atom™ processor and ARM-based architectures, allowing software development to easily target platforms using either architecture. The Ubuntu IVI Remix also supports Ubuntu One, a personal cloud service that enables users to access their personal media and stream their music from anywhere in the world.

The Ubuntu IVI Remix operating system is targeting next-generation IVI platforms to enable developers to build new in-vehicle entertainment user experiences such as rear seat movies, TV, gaming and music, geo-location, telephony, social media systems. The current version is based on Ubuntu 11.04 and is a pre-release version for testing and evaluation. A production version of the remix will be released based on Ubuntu 11.10 which is to be released in October.

"More and more OEMs are requiring GENIVI compliance," said Steve Crumb, GENIVI Alliance Executive Director. "Canonical's compliant offering will position them to participate in new IVI system solutions."

Jon Melamut, VP, operations and products OEM services at Canonical comments; “The GENIVI  compliant Ubuntu IVI Remix will bring significant advantages for GENIVI members who can now focus on bringing advanced yet fully complaint user experiences to market quickly, rather than on developing the foundations of the underlying operating system and stack.”
