Given that we work with Linux on ad-hoc projects, why should we engage with a partner across the board?

Consolidating Linux efforts on a single platform is most efficient from a development and partner perspective; Ubuntu is the clear choice for client computing given the breadth of market segments covered, international reach and industry momentum.

 

We want Linux to succeed as an alternative operating system even if it takes time. What can we do?

Improving component support for Linux is the best strategy for long-term Linux adoption. This can be achieved by:

  • Making Linux drivers a requirement in your component procurement process

  • Setting Linux certification as a goal across a wide range of systems even if you are not planning to pre-install

This also has the advantage of allowing you to move fast when new Linux opportunities arise.

 

If we wanted to go to market with Linux in one market segment, what would you recommend?

Ship Ubuntu on entry-level machines in emerging markets. Ubuntu is well-received and this gets the ecosystem supporting Linux effectively across a range of models.

 

My ODM wants to do the hardware enablement themselves - how can they work with Ubuntu?

Canonical’s ODM programme is specifically designed to train ODMs and transfer hardware enablement domain expertise. Our primary goal is to make the ODMs self-sufficient and profitable as quickly as possible.

Why do we hear so many stories about return rates? Is Linux a viable option for us?

Some of our partners have reported almost identical rates of return compared with XP, while other OEMs appear to have had different experiences.
