Intel, Canonical and Ubuntu

The close collaboration of Canonical and Intel delivers real value for PC OEMs, systems integrators and customers alike. From optimising the OS and applications to delivering usage models for emerging technologies—the resulting solution of Ubuntu running on Intel technology-based systems delivers ease-of-use, ease-of-installation, flexibility and choice—plus the confidence that “it just works.”

Working to optimise Ubuntu on Intel platforms

Intel - Leap aheadThrough a joint collaboration, Intel and Canonical engineers have optimised Ubuntu for Intel technology-based computers. These efforts include everything from software threading for boosted performance on Intel multi-core processors, improving power management for enhanced mobility,  extensively testing and validating drivers for Intel’s industry-leading graphics technologies, and for its wired and wireless network adapters.

As a result, Ubuntu runs best on Intel platforms, supports many of Intel’s latest features and delivers the performance advantages of the revolutionary Intel Core microarchitecture.

Ubuntu’s rapid development and release cycle—timed on a six-month cadence—means users of the Linux distribution will be able to quickly take advantage of future Intel architectural enhancements.

Canonical and Intel—enhancing Ubuntu Linux

Intel has been a proponent of open standards and involved in the open source community for more than 10 years, with a focus on maximising performance of open source software on Intel processor-based systems. Intel continues to contribute capabilities to the Linux kernel to further enhance its performance on Intel platforms and maintains one of the best Linux and open source competency centres in the industry with well over 700 Linux engineers who contribute to key projects, including the Ubuntu project.

Canonical supports a global organisation committed to the development, distribution and support of open source software products and communities. In addition to sponsoring Ubuntu, Canonical offers world-class, 24x7 commercial support for Ubuntu to business users through its global support team and partners. Engineering and professional services are also available to Intel Channel Partners and OEMs who need customised solutions and projects.

Advantages to OEMs and Systems Integrators

The combination of Ubuntu Linux running on Intel technology-based systems offers many advantages to PC manufacturers, system integrators and end-users alike:

  • Fully testing and certifying Ubuntu on Intel platform components results in a simple installation and a rewarding user experience.

  • The Ubuntu Server Edition brings desktop ease-of-use to Intel technology-based servers. It also supports several common configurations for deploying standard Internet services and supports Intel VTx with Kernel-based Virtual Machine.

  • Ubuntu supports more than 40 languages and provides a localised solution in numerous key markets, including many smaller markets that have historically been poorly supported by other solutions.

  • Canonical offers commercial support for solutions-oriented business models. Optimised OS options and applications for vertical markets, including small business and education, are available as well.

  • Access to Canonical’s skilled development is available to commercial partners and customers too. Support and training teams can assist in the customisation, configuration and certification of PCs and the replication of images.

  • As a Canonical partner, opportunities abound for promoting and co-marketing Intel technology-based PCs, leveraging the strong brands of Intel and Ubuntu.

  • Reselling Ubuntu customer support through one of Canonical’s partner programs is a great way to generate additional revenues.
